BPA or Bisphenol A

This is such a common chemical used in many commercial products today. It is known since the 30s that is acts like estrogen (estrogenic), it triggers female hormonal responses to whoever gets exposed to it. A short list of the different types of products where it is commonly found follows.                                                                                                          bpa health dangers

Polycarbonate Plastic bottles: baby and water bottles, sports equipment, medical and dental devices
CDs and DVDs
Eyeglass lenses
Household electronics
Coating on the inside of almost all food and beverage cans
Receipts: used as color developer in carbonless copy and thermal paper
Lining of water pipes

It seems that it is almost impossible to avoid this chemical indeed but the most immediate danger and exposure comes from water bottles, food and beverage cans and believe it or not from receipts! Researchers in Switzerland found out that 2 hours after exposure, 30 percent of the BPA from a receipt remains on the skin and can no longer be washed away; that is a proper artificial estrogen like dose, regardless if you are a man, woman, child or baby.

Replacing plastic bottles with glass ones is a very sensible choice here.  This is not possible for commercial beverages so maybe eliminating this devil would be a pretty wise option here ;-) . Also, wherever you can try to avoid canned products. Go for more traditional options in glass or porcelain jars.

Research on BPA and the harmful effects on the human body have been well documented for many years now. Without going into much detail (that would take many many pages of analysis indeed!), it pretty much affects most systems in the body. The list below highlights the most important effects as demonstrated by researchers all over the world.

  • Reproductive system and sexual behavior
  • Obesity
  • Neurological disorders
  • Effects on fetal and infant brain development and behavior
  • Thyroid disruption
  • Cancer : breast and prostate cancer and neuroblastoma  development
  • Suppresses DNA modifications which play critical role in proper gene expression

It is important for us, as consumers, to be aware of the true nature of the products surrounding us. Sadly, public health is not very well guarded at the moment by official bodies and institutions so it is our responsibility to make sure that we make the healthiest choices for us and our loved ones. Although sometimes it can be daunting to find safe options and alternatives, going for the easy or cheap solution will cost a lot more in the long run. Our bodies have tremendous detoxification and healing power but if we keep on feeding with dangerous toxic chemicals it is inevitable for these mechanisms to get overwhelmed and simply stop functioning at some point; it is simply a matter of time. Researching and providing with safe and sound food choices is the best and most important investment towards our health.
